What is MCSI?

The Medical Career and Science Institute (MCSI) is a one-week health careers non-residential camp hosted by the Bluegrass Healthcare Consortium that provides students an opportunity to ‘jump start their career in the health field.’ MCSI is designed for middle school students who are seriously interested in pursuing a career in a health profession. MCSI provides an opportunity to learn about the variety of careers in health professions and to learn some of the educational requirements leading to those careers.

News Updates

The Bluegrass Healthcare Consortium (BHC) hosted theMedical Career and Institute Camp, a one-week Health Careers Camp during the week of June 11th at Spencerian College. The Medical Career & Science Institute was designed to provide middle school students with an opportunity to jump start a career in the health field.

A total of 23 students took advantage of the opportunity. During the camp, students participated in a structured educational curriculum that included lectures and labs in algebra, anatomy and physiology, trigonometry and chemistry. They also gained hands-on experience in phlebotomy, radiology, First Responder Training and EKG. Camp highlights included a trip to the Sullivan School of Pharmacy and the Minimally Invasive Surgery Lab and Science Center at the University of Kentucky.

The MCSI Camp assisted students in increasing their knowledge of Algebra by 27%, Radiology by 38%, Anatomy and Physiology by 37%, First Reponder Training by 9%, Trigonometry by 46%, EKG Technology by 15%, Nurse's Assistant Requirements by 33%, and Pharmacy by 27%. These students gained hands-on experience in Phelbotomy, Radiology, First Reponder Training, and EKG Technology. Camp attendees were invited to the Sullivan School of Pharmacy, the Minimally Invasive Surgery Lab at the University of Kentucky, and the University of Kentucky Science Center.

To end the week, an awards dinner was held in downtown Lexington. About 100 people were in attendance to celebrate participants’ achievements throughout the week. Lieutenant Governor Jerry Abramson, keynote speaker, expressed his support of the Camp. Tom West, Executive Director of the Kentucky Workforce Investment Board, Beth Brinley, Commissioner of Department of Workforce Investment, and Beth Mills, LFUCG Commissioner of Social Services, also attended.
